Overview

Pharmaceutical chemistry is a discipline at the intersection of chemistry and pharmacology involved in with design, synthesis and developing drug candidates.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry is an important discipline which links many scientific disciplines and allows for collaboration with researchers from other disciplines like biologists, toxicologists, pharmacologists, microbiologists and bio-pharmacists in developing new drugs.

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry imparts in-depth knowledge about all the chemical aspects of drugs and natural products, such as structure, synthesis, isolation and structural activity relationship with Pharmacological activity. The department is consists of all major branches of pharmaceutical chemistry starting from basic organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, analytical and phytochemistry.

Medicinal chemistry involves the identification, synthesis and development of new chemical entities suitable for therapeutic use. It also includes the study of existing drugs, their biological properties, and their quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR). Computer-aided drug design and new biotechnological approaches are opening new path in the field of medicinal chemistry.

The Department offers excellent infrastructure with sophisticated instruments and well equipped laboratories. Pharmaceutical chemists are involved in designing and synthesizing new drugs as well as evaluate those drugs which are already in the market. They have the responsibility of designing newer drugs with improved efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetic profiles. .Pharmaceutical chemists are involved developing stringent analytical methods to the product for ensuring purity and develop analytical methods that will be useful for toxicological and pharmacological investigations.
